Additional locks for motorhomes: Which solution fits the Fiat Ducato?
Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper are among the most widely used base vehicles for motorhomes and panel vans. Accordingly, there is a large selection of additional locks. At the same time, choosing the right one is more complicated than it first appears: not every lock fits every model year, not every solution can be operated from both inside and outside, and a panel van has different requirements from a coachbuilt motorhome.
This guide explains the different types of additional locks available for Ducato, Boxer and Jumper, which doors they can secure and which combination suits each type of vehicle.
Why are additional locks useful on a motorhome?
Motorhomes are often opened not by sophisticated electronic attacks, but initially through a mechanical weak point in a door, lock or window.
An additional lock creates a second locking point that is independent of the factory central locking system. Even if the original lock is manipulated or the central locking is triggered, the door remains secured by the additional lock.
However, an additional lock does not automatically protect the original weak point itself. Different measures address different attack methods.
How are motorhomes commonly broken into?
Prick attack on the driver's door
On Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper, the so-called prick attack is a known method. The area around the driver's door is deliberately manipulated in order to trigger the central locking system.
This method is attractive to thieves because it can be quick, comparatively quiet and possible without extensive visible damage.
The PrickStop protective plate for the driver's door reinforces the known area and makes direct access to the weak point more difficult.

The protective plate and the additional lock have different functions:
- The protective plate makes the prick attack itself more difficult.
- The additional lock remains closed as an independent second locking point.
Forcing the lock cylinder
Another attack method is to forcibly manipulate or break the factory lock cylinder.
If the original locking system is defeated in this way, a separately locked additional lock can prevent the door from opening immediately.
Breaking a side window
A side window can be broken to reach into the interior or unlock the door from inside.
An additional lock cannot prevent the window from being broken. It can, however, help keep the door closed even after someone reaches through the window.
It is important that the lock cannot then be reached and released easily from inside. For this reason, among permanently installed cab locks we sell only the lockable version with a key cylinder.
Forcing windows and habitation doors
On coachbuilt, overcab and caravan layouts, habitation doors, garage hatches and windows are additional potential attack points.
Habitation doors in particular often have relatively lightweight factory locking mechanisms. An additional externally visible lock creates a substantially stronger mechanical obstacle.
What types of additional locks are available?
1. Hook-in or tensioned cab security systems
One simple solution is to connect the two cab doors from inside or brace them against each other.
These systems are not permanently installed in the door. Instead, when required, they are hooked between door trims, handles or other suitable attachment points.
One example is our universal cab security bar.
Advantages
- No permanent modification to the vehicle
- Usually no drilling required
- Flexible to use
- Quick to retrofit
- Especially useful for leased or rental vehicles
Disadvantages
- Must be fitted manually each time it is used
- Requires some interior space
- Mainly intended for locking from inside
- Less integrated than a permanently installed lock
These systems are particularly interesting for users who do not want permanent changes to the vehicle or who drive a leased vehicle.
2. Permanently installed additional locks for cab doors
Permanently installed cab locks are fitted directly to the driver's and passenger doors. They lock the doors mechanically and independently of the central locking system.
One example is the HEOSafe additional lock with key cylinder for Fiat Ducato Series 8.

The vehicle-specific HEOSafe cab locks integrate relatively discreetly into the interior trim. Another advantage is that they can be used with many common blackout and sun-protection systems.
The lockable version is particularly useful if a thief could reach into the vehicle after breaking a window. A locked unit cannot simply be released by operating an interior lever.
Interior locks require a clear access strategy
A lock that is operated from inside needs to be considered before leaving the vehicle.
For coachbuilt motorhomes, the following approach is common:
- Driver and passenger doors are locked from inside using cab locks.
- The vehicle is exited through the habitation door.
- The habitation door is locked from outside using its factory lock and ideally an additional external lock.
The habitation door then remains the normal external access point.
3. Additional locks for habitation doors
On coachbuilt and overcab motorhomes and many caravans, the habitation door is the main normal entrance.
External additional locks are available for these doors. When closed, they swing or lock in front of the door and make opening it more difficult even if the original lock has been defeated.
One example is the HEOSafe additional lock for habitation doors, hatches and rear garages. It can be operated from both inside and outside.

The advantage of externally fitted locks is not only their mechanical effect. They are visible before an attack begins, so a thief can immediately see that defeating the factory lock alone will not be enough.
Besides HEOSafe, Thule and Fiamma also offer suitable solutions for habitation doors, garage hatches and exterior storage compartments.
Important selection criteria include:
- Solid mounting
- A suitable mounting surface
- Correct swing or locking range
- Operation from outside
- Availability of keyed-alike sets
HEOSafe is particularly common in this area because the system covers many applications and multiple locks can often be ordered keyed alike.
Disadvantage of externally mounted locks
Installation normally requires drilling into the body, door frame or vehicle structure. Before fitting, check that the mounting surface is suitable and that there are no cables or installed components behind the intended position.
4. External locks for panel vans
On panel vans, the sliding door and rear doors must be considered in addition to the cab doors.
Externally mounted van-security locks are available for these applications. They connect the door and bodywork using an additional mechanical bolt.
One example is the HEOSafe Van Security additional lock for sliding and rear doors.

Typical applications:
- Sliding door
- Left and right rear doors
- Sets for side and rear doors
- Panel vans and commercial vans
Advantages
- Visible from outside
- Fully usable while the vehicle is unattended
- Independent of the central locking system
- Some versions available as keyed-alike sets
Disadvantage
- Installation in the bodywork required
- Drilling required
5. Additional locks for garage hatches and exterior compartments
Rear garages and exterior storage compartments often contain bicycles, tools, camping furniture or technical equipment.
Many external locks intended for habitation doors can also be installed on garage hatches or exterior compartments, provided the structure is sufficiently strong at the chosen mounting point.
Keyed-alike sets are particularly practical when several hatches or doors are secured. All additional locks can then be operated with the same key.
Lockable from inside or outside?
Locks operated from inside
These are particularly suitable for:
- Driver and passenger doors
- Overnight stays in the vehicle
- Vehicles with a separate habitation door as the exit
Advantages:
- Difficult to reach from outside
- Relatively discreet integration
- Independent of central locking
Bear in mind that the vehicle must then be exited through another door.
Locks operated from outside
These are particularly suitable for:
- Habitation doors
- Sliding doors
- Rear doors
- Garage hatches
- Completely unattended vehicles
Advantages:
- Usable while the vehicle is unattended
- Visible deterrent
- Can define a regular external access point
What if the remote key battery is flat?
This point is often overlooked when planning a security system.
The remote-control battery can go flat, the key can be damaged or the radio function can fail for another reason. This is rare, but it can become a problem if every mechanically accessible door is additionally secured.
On many newer panel vans based on Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper, the rear door no longer has a mechanical lock cylinder that can be operated from outside.
If the driver and passenger doors are locked from inside and the sliding and rear doors rely solely on the central locking remote, a failed remote may leave no normal means of access.
On coachbuilt motorhomes the situation is usually easier because the habitation door normally has its own mechanical lock.
On panel vans, a permanently usable mechanical emergency entrance is not always possible. You should therefore consider at least the following:
- Carry a spare battery for the remote key
- Store a second key separately
- Check the remote key regularly
- Establish in advance which door can be opened mechanically in an emergency
Practical tip: A tracker using Apple's Find My network can be carried on the key ring. If that tracker uses the same coin-cell battery as the remote key, its battery can temporarily serve as an emergency replacement. Check in advance that the battery type really is identical.
Coachbuilt motorhome or panel van: which combination fits?
Coachbuilt motorhome on a Ducato base
A typical combination consists of:
- PrickStop protective plate on the driver's door
- Permanently installed cab locks on the driver and passenger doors
- An externally operated additional lock on the habitation door
- Additional locks on the rear garage if required
The habitation door remains the regular access point from outside.
Panel van on a Ducato base
A typical combination consists of:
- PrickStop protective plate on the driver's door
- Cab locks on the driver and passenger doors
- Externally operated Van Security locks for the sliding and rear doors
Because many panel vans have no independent mechanical access through the rear door, a second key or at least a suitable spare battery for the remote key should also be carried.
Which locks fit which model year?
With vehicle-specific cab locks, the model year alone is often not sufficient.
The actual interior door trim is decisive. Facelifts and model changes were not always introduced at the same time by Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën.
For example, the cab lock for a Peugeot Boxer model 2025 corresponds to the version used on the Fiat Ducato since its model update from 2021.
Additional uncertainty arises because:
- First registration and production year may differ
- The base vehicle may have been produced well before the motorhome conversion
- Motorhome manufacturers may store base vehicles for extended periods
- Model names are not used consistently
- Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën introduce changes at different times
Find the correct lock with the configurator
To simplify selection, we created a motorhome security configurator.
The assignment is not based only on make and model year. Comparison images of the interior door trim help identify which version is actually fitted. This is often more reliable than choosing solely by first registration or model designation.
Additional lock alone or in combination?
An additional lock secures a door. It does not automatically prevent the vehicle being opened through another entrance or then driven away.
For Ducato, Boxer and Jumper, it therefore makes sense to combine different layers of protection:
- The PrickStop protective plate makes quick access through the known driver's-door weak point more difficult.
- Cab or exterior locks keep doors closed independently of the central locking system.
- An OBD lock can make quick access to the diagnostic interface more difficult.
- A mechanical pedal lock makes it harder to drive the vehicle away even if the doors and vehicle electronics have already been defeated.
- An alarm and concealed tracking complement the mechanical protection.
Frequently asked questions about additional locks for Ducato motorhomes
Do I still need an additional lock if I have PrickStop?
The two products protect against different stages of an attack. The PrickStop protective plate makes access to the known weak point on the driver's door more difficult. An additional lock remains closed as a second mechanical locking point if the factory locking system is nevertheless defeated.
Can HEOSafe cab locks be used with blackout blinds?
The vehicle-specific HEOSafe cab locks integrate relatively flat into the door trim and are compatible with many common sunshade and blackout systems. The specific combination should nevertheless be checked before purchase.
Are additional locks available without drilling?
Yes. Hook-in or tensioned cab security systems generally require no permanent installation. Permanently installed cab, habitation and Van Security locks require drilling depending on the version.
Should an additional lock be operated from inside or outside?
For driver and passenger doors, locks operated from inside are often suitable. Habitation, sliding and rear doors and garage hatches should generally also be lockable from outside.
What should I consider on a panel van without a mechanical rear-door lock?
If the cab doors are secured from inside and the remaining doors can only be opened remotely, a failed remote can become a problem. A second key or a spare battery for the remote key should therefore be carried.
Which additional lock fits my model year?
Not only the model year but also the actual interior door trim is decisive. The security configurator allows selection using comparison images.
